The English Translation of Chinese Idioms
Abstract
Idioms are the crystallization of the wisdom of mankind,gemstones in literature and art,galaxy of philosophic life.In a certain sense,they can be seen as a small encyclopedia of a nation’s moral,experience and knowledge.Skilled and proper use of idioms can strengthen the effect of expression.To master the English translation of Chinese idioms in the course of English learning and translation practicing will help us improve the ability of language expression.
This thesis is based on the relevant Chinese and English theory of idioms,and then combines the associated researches in the translation of idioms,and also the research steps and methods,to summarize a comprehensive definition of idioms and their basic characteristics.This thesis sum up the similarities and differences between Chinese and English idioms in comparison,then provide the translation methods of Chinese idioms and give some tips that should pay attention to in the translation process of Chinese idioms.This thesis aims to draw people’s attention and their interests in learning of this language gemstone,which can help to improve the understanding and using of idioms.In the practice to improve our ability of idioms translation and language expression,so as to spread our splendid Chinese culture.

摘 要
习语是人类智慧的结晶,文学艺术中的宝石、生活哲理的荟萃.在某种意义上说,它又是一个民族在道德、经验和知识方面的小百科全书.恰当地使用习语会增强语言表达的效果,同时也会显示出一个人对语言的掌握程度.在英语学习中掌握汉语习语的英译会有助于我们语言表达能力的提高.
本文以前人提出的有关英汉习语理论为基础,结合相关学者在研究习语翻译的理论依据、以及研究步骤和研究方法,综合出了习语的定义与习语的基本特征.通过对比,总结出汉英习语的异同点.在前人提出的相关翻译方法的基础上分析综合出自己的方法,并总结出在汉语习语的英译过程中应该注意的问题.本文旨在通过对汉英习语翻译的探讨引起大家对这一语言瑰宝的注意和学习,在语言文化方面的理解和运用上得到进一步的提高.不断提高我们习语汉译英水平,以更好地传播中国文化.
